■概要 Summary
This paper explores the research, development, and deployment of two games for research designed to foster musical improvisation: “Otogarden” (Oliva 2021) and “Night Parade of 100 Demons” (Oliva 2024). Starring Japanese yokai, these games aim to afford extemporaneous musicality without the constraints of traditional winning conditions. Applying “Research through Design” (RtD) methodology, the games are positioned as aesthetic objects that reimagine yokai myths through musical play. Improvisation, identified as an under explored musicking modality in digital games, is here introduced to players by leveraging the playfulness and raucousness of yokai. Reflecting their interdisciplinary nature, these games have been presented at art galleries, academic conferences, game festivals, and through live performances across Europe, Japan, US, and Australia from 2021 onwards. This presentation documents the process, establishing a precedent for applied ludomusicological research, originally connecting game design, cultural heritage, and experimental music practice.
