■概要 Summary
The videogame industry is currently in crisis. Since 2022, over 50,000 developers have lost their jobs globally. More games are being released than every before, but players are spending more of their time in a very small number of games. Multinational corporations are shutting down well-loved game studies; independent studios are struggling to attract new capital; and new generative AI technologies further threaten job security. This presentation will present in-progress research from the book I am currently writing to show how the current game industry crisis can be explained through Marx’s theory of the capitalist mode of production. I will outline Marx’s theory of capitalist production, show how it applies to the evolution of the videogame industry, and provide a preliminary for how this explains the current game industry crisis.

■概要 Summary
In this presentation, I will argue that recent philosophical accounts of game aesthetics have focused too narrowly on the play stance – the first-person experience of playing games – while neglecting the design stance, which approaches games as formal systems of rules and mechanics. Drawing on Frank Lantz’s conception of games as aesthetic systems, I develop a framework for a system aesthetics centered on the design stance. I argue that games can be aesthetically appreciated through their systemic properties, including complexity, depth, emergence, harmony, and mechanical beauty. By shifting attention from play experiences to games as formal systems, the presentation highlights an underexplored dimension of game aesthetics.
