Monogatari games remediate the representational conventions, content, aesthetics, and cultural themes from pre-modern Japanese traditions of monogatari storytelling across a wide range of literary, oral, visual, and performative texts (e.g. gunki monogatari – war/martial tales; otogi-zōshi – short stories; and yōkai (strange, supernatural apparition) folklore). The aim of this presentation is to introduce and detail further both the subject and framework of the research project, including the outline of the chosen methods for data collecting (including recorded game footage and interviews), gameplay analysis as a viable multimodal approach to studying history from recorded footage, and the intended case studies that will be examined for illustration. It is anticipated that the research will identify some of the gameplay modes of engagement to Japanese history within rekishi monogatari games and how they re-construct Japanese forms of monogatari storytelling for communicating an array of new experiences of these games’ respective Japanese histories as sources on Japan’s cultural re-contextualisations and receptions of its What is the relationship between videogames and the player’s time? This question motivated early understandings of digital play in the Japanese 1970s and 1980s but has yet to receive academic attention in the realm of media history. This presentation therefore explores the question through early game design, and more specifically through the idea of a rhythmic organization of play time. It draws upon archival to show how rhythm functions as a key temporal epistemology of game design across several interlinked perspectives. First, it suggests that rhythm within designers’ discourse consists of patterns of excitation and relaxation that unfold through the player’s progress, in ways that can capture the player’s attention for increasingly lengthy periods of time. Second, the paper places rhythm in dialogue with the forms of closure in early game design, such as time limits, difficulty settings, and save points. Rather than seeing closure and rhythm as diametrically opposed, it argues instead that rhythm works to create media artefacts characterized by the entwinement of ending and extension: game over and continue. Finally, the presentation situates this dynamic within the context of the temporal pathologization of gaming in the late 1970s and 1980s to argue that the core of the debates around gaming children was ultimately a question of when play ought to end—and, subsequently, how it could be subsumed within the dominant temporal epistemology of scheduled childhood.

来る2025年5月30日(金曜日)、立命館大学ゲーム研究センターによる2025年度第4回定例研究会を実施致します。発表者は、Ben Redder氏とKeita Moore氏です。登録・参加料不要となっ 続きを読む…

[2,3

post-3158","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-event","category-seminar
["GET
