They explain their choice of career as a natural next step in a lifelong process of self-realization: from players to game makers. However, some desire more agency than others, leading them to become indie developers. Virtually all have played Japanese video games at one point in their lives, whether they were aware of the provenience or not. Some include migration to Japan as a step towards their process of self-realization. However, since 2023 consecutive rounds of layoffs signal to an increased precarity in the industry for the workers, which impacts their professional and personal plans. Although it seems like a universal struggle, it is rather a system specific feature. In Japan, not only are developers never laid off en masse, the indie scene is only just beginning to grow as part of the mainstream industry, rather than against it. In trying to expand the Western discourse around video game development and specifically indie developers, my research utilizes the stories of expats and their pursuit for self-fulfillment.
