International Digital Game Preservation 2019
\nSymposium: What Requirements for Digital Games Preservation?<\/small><\/h3>\n

During the last decades, digital games have increasingly gained economic, social and cultural significance. Accordingly, the need for research and education pertaining to digital games is continually growing. Many games are in danger due to technological obsolescence and physical deterioration. Games that were published during the 1970\u2019s and 80\u2019s, especially, are in an immediate need for preservation. In this context, various approaches to game preservation are beginning to be developed around the world.
\nMoreover, attempts at international collaboration in the field of digital game preservation are starting in several regions of Europe and the United States. This symposium, as a part of this international movement, carries the ambition of serving as a Japanese milestone. With specialists engaged in the practice of game preservation in Japan and overseas, as well as commentators aiming at building a durable cooperation with other actors of the field, we will examine the issue of what shape game preservation should take in the context of a network of cooperating archiving institutions. Furthermore, we have invited researchers whose area of expertise lies in game history and ontology with a focus on questions of definition and usage of game archive, to address technical issues of archiving methods, game cataloging, or metadata designing. Together we will grapple with questions of preservation and access to game materials from game studies viewpoint. After an overview of the current state of game preservation research and its achievements, we will consider the question of future usages and<\/p>\n

applications, and discuss its requirements.<\/p>\n
