This presentation examines the prospect of learning about Japan through video games and discusses how such an undertaking might lead to productive learning outcomes. In order to do so, it speculates as to why video game players learn, how they should learn, and what they might expect to learn from their interactions with video games. For many players who already associate themselves with Japanese video games, learning about Japan by playing games might seem like an ideal scenario. Despite the superficial appeal, however, it is necessary to qualify in what way such learning might properly manifest itself so as not to become superficial itself. Ultimately, it will be argued that learning about Japan through video games can in fact lead to productive learning outcomes if the end goals of such learning are properly formalised and certain caveats are met.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
